Keeping it Casual

When Bill and Mary were planning their new home, Eric Jabaley of Dogwood Architecture was asked to design a cozy retreat for the couple that could accommodate plenty of entertainment space for guests. (Photos by Renee Sauer)

A peaceful blue and gray color-scheme, selected by Angela Crittenden of Teal Interior Design, is echoed throughout the craftsman style home.

Bill and Mary worked closely with Emily Damasco to select Eldorado’s White Bark Cliffstone for the columns, foundation and fireplace. They chose Pacific Bluestone for the front and back porches. They love it for the distinctive color and old-fashioned feeling.

Chiseled edges on the bluestone steps and porch border enhance the comfortable and casual atmosphere. The stonework was installed by Mike Edmondson of Millennium Masonry.

The couple enjoy many hours on the terrace, dining and hosting friends. Decorative beach pebbles are used instead of mulch. They are a low-maintenance, one-time application that aids drainage.

The patio features Beton Grey porcelain pavers. These exterior porcelain tiles won’t absorb heat, so you can walk on them barefoot. They’re also UV and stain resistant. The stone on the grill cabinet matches the fireplace.

Rainchains gracefully fall into ceramic planters filled with Mexican beach pebbles. At night they are artfully lit from above (as part of a low voltage system installed by Outdoor Illumination). Bill says, They are fascinating to watch, and make drinking a bourbon on the patio a real event during a rain shower.

The in-ground hot tub, installed by Caribbean Pools, is surrounded by Silver Travertine coping, accented by Mexican beach pebbles and framed by bluestone.

Jon Mayer crafted the custom bullnose edge on the coping in Stone Garden’s on-site fabrication shop. The spa is remote-controlled from a cell phone, making it a favorite feature.

Bill and Mary’s new home was the perfect canvas on which to paint the colors of outdoor living. With its multiple “rooms” the couple can now enjoy quiet time together or share ample party space with their guests.
